What did Ancient Egyptians wear?

    Since the climate in Egypt was very hot, the Egyptians wore very light clothing made from lightweight linens, and sometimes cotton. Wool was also used but very rarely. Silk was traded and found in some Egyptian tombs. Animal skins were also worn, but only by pharaohs or priests. The pharaohs also wore ceremonial clothing to be buried in. We can see what they wore from the many paintings and sculptures they left behind. Ancient Egyptian clothes covered most of their skin and were made from plant fibers such as linen.

What is Linen?
Linen is made from the fibers of the flax plant which the Egyptians grew.

How were the clothes made?
The first stages of the linen production were performed by men: They reaped the plants and by beating and combing the plants they extracted fibers from them, which could be spun into thread, the first of the stages often performed by women. Women would make the clothes using looms, which were equipment to weave the material.

What did the children of Ancient Egypt dress Like?
Most young children went around completely naked. When they were six years old they began to wear clothes that would protect them from the intense dry heat.

What did Egyptian men wear?
Men of the working classes wore a loincloth or short kilt and sometimes a type of shirt.

What did Egyptian women wear?
Women wore straight dresses with one or two shoulder straps.

Why did the Ancient Egyptians wear make-up and jewelery?
The Egyptians wore make-up and jewel to honor the gods. Both men and women wore blue and green eyeshadow and black eyeliner.One item of jewelery, the amulet, was believed to protect the owners and give them strength.
